Gadegal Homestay Narkanda Review: Great Views, Poor Service
The valley looked excellent from the balcony, but the room and service did not match that first impression. We stopped at Gadegal Homestay while returning home from Kaza, using it as an overnight break between the Spiti side and Gurgaon. The setting is the strongest reason to consider it. The homestay stands above the Shimla to Narkanda road near Shillaru, surrounded by forest, mountain slopes and apple-growing country. The weak points during my visit were serious though: slow service, poor cleanliness, difficulty finding staff early in the morning and food that was inconsistent.
My quick verdict
Gadegal Homestay has a beautiful, quiet location and a useful duplex room for a small group. I would not book it only on the strength of high online ratings. During my stay, maintenance, hygiene and service fell well short of the scenery. The property has potential, but it needed more care than it was receiving when I visited.
Three of us stayed in the duplex-style room. We were quoted ₹3,000 for the night and expected the final amount might come down to roughly ₹2,500 after discussion, but I did not record a confirmed final payment. The approach deserves attention
The building sits above the main road, and the final approach is steep and rough. It is not the sort of entrance I would treat casually after dark or in bad weather. Our footage shows loose stone and an uneven incline beside the property. A driver who is uncomfortable on hill roads should call the host and ask about the latest access condition before arriving.
There was space to leave vehicles near the property during our stay. The picture shows two cars on the rough parking area, with a rocky slope immediately beside them. Space existed, but it did not resemble a paved hotel car park. Rain, snow or ongoing work could change how easy that final section feels.
The location was genuinely peaceful
This is where the stay did well. There was no dense market or line of hotels crowding the immediate view. From the balcony we could see the winding road, forest and cultivated slopes across the valley. After a long drive from Kaza, that open view felt calm.
The balcony had a small round table and two chairs, so it was possible to sit outside rather than only look through glass. Morning light opened up the whole valley. The location also felt close to nature without being cut off from the main route, which is useful on a road trip when the stay is a break rather than the destination.
Inside our duplex room
The room had a distinctive wooden interior. Timber covered the walls and sloping ceiling, and a narrow staircase led to a loft sleeping area. Three people could use the layout without placing every bed on one level. Visually, it had far more character than a plain roadside room.
The room also had a regular bed on the lower level, a patterned floor covering, a mirror and small furniture pieces. Heated bedding and blankets were provided, so cold was not my main complaint. That is an important positive for a hill stay.
Cleanliness spoiled the room
The wooden construction photographed well, but cleanliness was disappointing. The mattress area, pillows and covers did not look properly maintained to me. This was not a small cosmetic issue after close inspection. It changed how comfortable I felt using the room.
We also found a large spider and had to remove it ourselves. A hill property can never prevent every insect from entering, and being near forest means guests should expect some contact with nature. Even so, bedding and room cleaning remain the property’s responsibility. Better housekeeping would have changed my judgement considerably.
Service was the biggest problem
We ordered dinner at night and waited for hours. In the morning, as 8:00 approached, we needed to check out but could not find a staff member or get a response by phone. Someone leaving early for a long road journey needs basic coordination, even if breakfast is not ready.
The property appeared to have very limited staff for the number of guests present. I saw another car, a taxi and a motorcycle, which suggested other people were staying too. I cannot confirm the staffing arrangement, but the result for us was slow assistance at night and nobody readily available when we wanted to leave.
Dinner was mixed
The dal was fine. The paneer butter masala was the weak dish. To me it tasted like packaged, ready-to-heat paneer gravy rather than something freshly prepared, though that is my impression and not a claim about how the kitchen made it.
Food service matters more at a hillside homestay because guests may not want to drive again after arriving. If dinner timing is important, confirm the order and expected serving time before settling in. Carrying a few road-trip snacks is sensible too.
Views from different parts of the property
The balcony was not the only good viewpoint. An upper passage looked directly down towards a sharp bend in the road, with pine trees and fields spread across the opposite slope. Another terrace view showed outdoor tables, a small neighbouring structure and the valley continuing behind it.
These were real strengths. A little seating, better upkeep and more attentive hosting could make the outdoor areas much more enjoyable in the evening. During our visit, they felt like good spaces that were not being used to their full potential.
How the online ratings compared with my stay
I chose the property partly because its online rating appeared very high. Current platforms still show strong scores, but the sample sizes and methods differ. Booking.com showed an 8.8 property score when checked, while its four written reviews included both high praise and one comment that food needed improvement and should be served on time. Justdial displayed 4.8 from hundreds of ratings.
Those scores did not match my experience of the bedding, dinner delay or morning checkout. That does not prove other reviews are wrong. Staff, rooms and operating conditions can change. It does mean travellers should read recent detailed comments rather than treating one headline number as a complete answer.
Who might still like this homestay?
A small group wanting a quiet road-trip stop may like the duplex layout and valley views, especially if current reviews confirm that housekeeping and staffing have improved. The location suits people who would rather wake to forest and apple country than stay inside busy Narkanda.
I would be cautious with elderly travellers, very young children or anyone who dislikes steep approaches. The internal loft stairs and rough outdoor ground also deserve attention. Ask for current photographs of the access and the exact room assigned to you.

Would I stay again?
Not on the same conditions. The view alone is not enough for me to ignore poor room hygiene and unreliable service. If recent, detailed guest reports showed clear improvement, I could reconsider because the building, duplex concept and quiet setting are genuinely appealing.
My honest result is a property with excellent raw ingredients and weak execution during my visit. I would choose dependable cleanliness and responsive staff over a photogenic balcony, particularly after a tiring Spiti drive.

Our difficulty was not finding the property. It was getting help once we were there.
For a one-night road-trip stop, timing matters. We had already driven from the Kaza side, so waiting hours for dinner and then searching for someone around 8 am affected the next leg of the journey. A guest planning a relaxed two-night stay may judge that delay differently, but anyone following a fixed driving schedule should agree on dinner and checkout arrangements before arrival.
Price versus what we received
The ₹3,000 quote sounded workable for three people in a duplex, especially with the view and heated bedding. My problem was the gap between the room concept and its upkeep. A clever loft layout cannot compensate for covers and pillows that do not feel clean. At that price, I expected the basics to be handled without having to chase anyone.
I have not added meal prices because they were not captured clearly in my notes or video. I have also avoided turning the expected ₹2,500 negotiation into a final bill. That distinction matters. Travellers should compare the current room-only and meal-inclusive prices on a live listing, then confirm the total directly with the property.
