I visited Sissu in April and woke up to heavy snowfall. From my room at La Hault
Sissu, I could see the waterfall and mountains covered in fresh snow. It was beautiful,
but it also changed the practical side of the trip very quickly. Vehicle movement
was being restricted according to the conditions, and this was not weather to treat
casually.

Sissu has become much easier to reach from Manali through the Atal Tunnel, yet it
still feels like Lahaul. The air is colder, the landscape opens out around the Chandra
River and the weather can turn an ordinary drive into a serious mountain journey.

**My short answer:** Sissu is worth visiting for the valley, waterfall, river and
snow-covered scenery. Check road and weather updates on the morning you travel,
register your vehicle if the current rules require it and never assume that access
through the tunnel means every road beyond it is safe.

## What April snowfall looked like during my trip

I had not expected the village to look quite this dramatic. Snow covered the road,
roofs and slopes, while the waterfall remained visible across the valley. The view
from the room was the highlight of the stay.

Fresh April snowfall around Sissu during my visit.

The snow also brought limits. During those conditions, only suitable four-wheel-
drive vehicles were being permitted in parts of the route. That was specific to
my visit and the decisions being made at the time. It should not be read as a permanent
rule, because police and district authorities change traffic controls according
to snowfall, ice and road clearance.

I enjoyed seeing Sissu under snow. I would not recommend chasing the same scene
without checking whether your vehicle, clothing and driving experience are right
for the day.

## Reaching Sissu from Manali

The usual road route runs from Manali towards the Atal Tunnel and enters Lahaul
from the tunnel’s north side. Sissu is one of the first major village stops beyond
that side of the tunnel.

The tunnel has shortened the journey, but travel time still depends on Manali traffic,
tunnel controls, snow, ice and congestion at popular roadside stops. Leave in daylight
and keep extra time in the plan. If authorities stop traffic, wait for their instructions
instead of looking for an unofficial detour.

Himachal Pradesh currently operates the e-Aagman portal for vehicles entering Lahaul
and Spiti. Its requirements distinguish between permits and tickets for different
circuits. Check the portal before departure because the rule that applies to your
route can change.

## Do you need a special vehicle?

In clear weather, travellers use ordinary cars, taxis and buses to reach Sissu.
Fresh snow is a different situation. Grip, ground clearance, tyres, driver experience
and official traffic restrictions become much more important.

On my April visit, the weather led to restrictions favouring four-wheel-drive vehicles.
I was travelling in a Mahindra Thar, but even a capable vehicle does not make an
icy road risk-free. It helps only when the driver also understands the conditions.

If snow is forecast, ask your hotel or driver for a current update, check official
notices and carry warm layers in the vehicle. Do not rely on yesterday’s social-
media video as today’s road report.

## My stay at La Hault Sissu

I stayed at La Hault Sissu. The room view gave me a clear look at Sissu Waterfall
and the snow-covered mountains, which was the reason the property worked so well
for this trip.

I am describing my own stay, not claiming the property is still the best option
for every traveller. Prices, management, room condition and service can change.
Before booking, ask for the exact room category, heating arrangement, parking access
and meal availability.

Heating matters more than a pretty photograph when the temperature falls. Confirm
whether the room heater is included, whether hot water is available at fixed times
and how the property handles a power interruption.

## Sissu Waterfall from across the valley

The waterfall is one of the village’s clearest landmarks. Himachal Tourism describes
it as cascading over a cliff across the river from Sissu. The official regional
planning document also notes a suspension bridge that provides access towards the
fall.

Seeing it from the village is easy. Walking closer is a separate decision and depends
on trail, bridge, snow and weather conditions. Ask locally before starting, especially
after heavy rain or snowfall.

I was happy with the view from the room and village during this trip. Fresh snow
was already giving us enough to deal with, so forcing a longer walk would not have
improved the day.

## A quiet walk around Sissu

Sissu lies on broad ground above the Chandra River, with fields, willow and poplar
trees around the settlement in warmer months. Snow changed the colours during my
visit, but the open shape of the valley was still easy to appreciate.

Keep the village walk simple. Spend time by the lake area, look across to the waterfall
and move slowly through the settlement without treating homes and fields as photo
props. This is a living village, not a film set.

The Lord Ghepan temple is important locally. Official regional information says
the deity is regarded as the protector of Lahaul and notes that the temple itself
is not open to outsiders. Respect any local access restriction and never enter because
a gate happens to be open.

## What can you realistically do in one day?

A day trip from Manali can include the tunnel journey, time around Sissu, the waterfall
view and a meal. That is enough if roads are clear and you leave early.

I would not add distant places such as Jispa, Baralacha La or Chandratal to the
same casual day plan. Those routes have their own distance, altitude and seasonal
access issues. Sissu deserves more than a ten-minute photograph before another long
drive.

If the weather turns, shorten the list immediately. A safe return through the tunnel
matters more than completing every saved map pin.

## When is the best time to visit Sissu?

Late spring through autumn generally offers easier sightseeing conditions, though
high routes farther into Lahaul may open on a different schedule. Summer brings
greener fields and easier village walks. Autumn can offer clearer skies and colder
nights.

Winter and early spring can transform Sissu with snow, as I saw in April, but access
may be delayed or restricted. The Atal Tunnel improves connectivity to Lahaul, yet
avalanches, snow clearance and local traffic controls still affect travel.

Choose the season based on what you want. For easy walking, avoid chasing fresh
snowfall. For snow, accept that the plan may change before you reach the tunnel.

## Altitude and weather deserve a slower pace

Sissu is high enough for some visitors to feel the thinner air, cold or dehydration.
Walk slowly after arrival, drink water and avoid turning the first hour into a hard
climb.

If you develop a severe headache, vomiting, confusion, unusual breathlessness or
poor coordination, do not ignore it. Seek medical help and move to a lower altitude
when advised. This article cannot replace professional medical guidance.

Carry sunglasses, sunscreen, gloves, warm socks and a wind-resistant outer layer
when snow is possible. Weather outside the tunnel can feel very different from Manali.

## Food and fuel planning

Sissu has local eateries and seasonal visitor services, but opening hours can shrink
in bad weather or quieter months. Eat when a reliable option is available instead
of waiting for a specific cafe from an old list.

Keep drinking water and a small snack in the vehicle. For longer journeys beyond
Sissu, check fuel availability before leaving the more developed route. Mountain
delays feel longer when the tank is low and the group has not eaten.

## Should you stay overnight?

Stay overnight if you want a quieter evening, an early village walk or more flexibility
around changing weather. A day trip works for travellers whose main goal is the
tunnel and a short look at Sissu.

My overnight stay was worthwhile because the snowfall and room view became the real
experience. It also meant I was not trying to drive back immediately after the weather
changed.

The trade-off is that winter services can be limited. Confirm meals, heating, parking
and cancellation terms directly with the property.

## My practical Sissu checklist

 * Check the official e-Aagman requirement for your vehicle and route.
 * Read current district or police road updates on the day of travel.
 * Carry identification, water, warm layers and some cash.
 * Ask the property about heating, hot water and parking.
 * Do not continue past a police barrier or road closure.
 * Take every piece of rubbish back with you.

## Would I return to Sissu?

Yes. The waterfall view and the valley after fresh snow stayed with me. I would
return in a greener month as well, simply to see how different the same landscape
feels without a white layer over everything.

I would make the same choice about safety. If the road authority says wait, turn
back or use a particular vehicle, that instruction comes before the hotel booking.
Sissu is still there when the weather clears.
